HPB surgery refers to surgery involving the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary system, which includes the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile ducts. These organs are closely connected, and diseases affecting one part of the system can sometimes involve another. HPB surgery requires careful assessment of imaging, blood tests, liver function, and the exact location and extent of disease.
HPB surgery may be required for:
●
Liver tumours
●
Gallbladder cancer
●
Bile duct cancer
●
Pancreatic tumours
●
Liver cysts in
selected cases
●
Complicated
gallbladder disease
●
Bile duct obstruction
●
Certain pancreatic
cysts
●
Selected benign liver
and pancreatic conditions
Depending on the condition, procedures may include:
●
Liver resection
●
Whipple procedure
●
Pancreatectomy
●
Gallbladder removal
●
Bile duct resection
●
Bile duct
reconstruction
●
Combined liver and
bile duct surgery
Patients with a liver, pancreatic, gallbladder, or bile duct
tumour should be assessed by a specialist experienced in HPB surgery.
Persistent jaundice, unexplained weight loss, recurrent
abdominal pain, a pancreatic cyst or mass, or an abnormal scan involving the
liver or bile ducts should also be evaluated.
HPB surgery is often planned after reviewing imaging such as
CT, MRI or MRCP. In some cases, additional endoscopic tests or biopsies may be
required.
The surgical approach depends on the location and size of
the disease and whether nearby blood vessels or other organs are involved.
